Today, we can do better dentistry, in a less toxic, more individualized, more environmentally friendly way than ever. Biological Dentistry is a thought process, an attitude, and a guide for making choices in dental practice.
Dr. Grieco is a member of the IAOMT and the IABDM, the world’s premier organizations which support holistic practitioners. Both organizations are networks of dentists, physicians & allied health professionals committed to caring for the whole person – body, mind, spirit and mouth.
The IABDM offers a definition of what Biological Dentistry is.
Biological dentistry is concerned with the whole body effects of all dental materials, techniques and procedures. It is fluoride-free, mercury-free and mercury-safe. Individualized testing for biocompatibility of dental materials is a must. It insists that all clinical practice be designed of components that sustain life or improve the patient’s quality of life. For the word “biological” refers to life.
Clinical awareness and science show us that what happens in the mouth is reflected in the body, and what happens in the body is reflected in the mouth. The complex, dynamic relationships of oral and systemic health within the context of the whole person are inseparable.
Biological dentistry unites the best clinical practices and technologies of Western dental medicine with a wide array of practices beyond its horizon. Biological dentists may be general dentists, periodontists, orthodontists, oral surgeons or pedodontists. They also have extensive training in dental toxicology and specific modes of healing, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, herbology, homeopathy, iridology and energy medicine.
While it may be impossible to construct an authoritative list of protocols followed by the “typical” biological office, all share a common paradigm: treating causes of symptoms rather than symptoms toward the goal of restoring and sustaining health. We also share a deep and constant belief in the Hippocratic dictate First, do no harm. Biological dentistry is conservative dentistry. The aim is to be minimally invasive yet appropriately active.
"Biologic dentists recognize the impact of toxic materials and relate it to dental and physiological health. The dentists are concerned with the integrity of the oral cavity and the use of materials and procedures in their practices that are systematicaly compatible."
One of the key benefits to biologic dentistry is the understanding of the possibility of underlying medical issues being related to the oral cavity....that may otherwise go undetected. In addition, biologic dentistry focuses on the health and wellness of the whole body, not just the oral cavity.
The mouth, heart, circulatory system, lungs, digestive system and the immune system are all interconnected. All dentists, to some extent, see the importance of the mouth in the overall health of an individual. For instance, studies have concluded the link between heart health, diabetes, pregnancy health and inflammatory conditions related to gum disease. However, many dentists are not trained nor do they pay attention to the long term effects of what dental materials do (or could do) to the whole body. Biologic dentistry focuses on this concept and is performed by preparing your body before, during and after dental treatment.
We work together with select doctors, chiropractors, pharmacists and holistsic practitioners to totally optimize and address your whole body care.
